Cooking oil is one of the biggest recurring costs for SMEs is the food business. From caterers to fast-food outlets, frying every day can quickly eat into profits. But a local innovation promises to change that.
The Orbit Filter, developed by Paarl-based engineer Johan Smit, is an industrial oil purification system that cleans and extends the life of frying oil. Smit believes the technology could help SMEs save money, reduce waste, and improve operational efficiency.
“Small businesses often spend a fortune on oil, only to throw it away after a few uses,” Smit told Vutivi Business News. “The Orbit Filter pumps oil through a purification unit and sends it back to the fryer, keeping it clean and fresh for longer. This is already making a tangible difference for large factories, and I’m now working on a smaller version designed for SMMEs.”

Smit initially designed the system for major food producers such as Finlar Foods, Supreme Poultry, and I&J. Still, he said the biggest opportunity lies in helping smaller enterprises that fry food daily. “Cooking oil is expensive, especially for smaller operators. By reusing it safely, they can reduce waste and reinvest the savings into their businesses,” he said.
Entrepreneur Eddie Mokoena said many small business owners are unaware that such technology exists.“Most small businesses replace oil every few days, which is costly,” Mokoena said.
“If there’s a system that can help us use oil longer without affecting the taste or quality of food, that would be a real game-changer for entrepreneurs like me.”
Maureen Tapfuma, owner of Mo’s Eatery and Events, said that access to affordable equipment could make a big difference. Tapfuma, who started her catering business three years ago, said tools like the Orbit Filter could help SMMEs manage expenses and grow sustainably.
“The biggest challenge for small businesses is managing costs while trying to expand,” Tapfuma said. “If we can get technology that helps us save money on essentials like oil, we can invest more in equipment, hire people, and create more opportunities.”
Tapfuma also employs extra staff during large events as a way of empowering others. “Supporting small businesses has a ripple effect, when one business grows, others benefit too,” she said.

Smit is currently developing a smaller and more affordable version of the Orbit Filter specifically for SMEs, along with a “filter aid” powder that binds impurities in the oil for faster and easier cleaning.
“There are thousands of small businesses frying food daily. Helping them reduce oil costs and waste is a simple way to boost profitability and efficiency,” Smit told Vutivi Business News.
The Orbit Filter is manufactured locally in Paarl, with several units already installed across South Africa and plans to expand production and export abroad.
