Sibongile Gumede, the founder of Bongi G Farm, which received chickens and a structure from the North West government late last year, says there has already been a positive impact on her business.
The structure was officially handed over to Gumede during a recent government accelerated service delivery programme at JB Marks Local Municipality.
“The 5,000-layer structure has completely transformed our operations. It’s allowed us to scale up production significantly, improve efficiency and maintain better hygiene and management of the flock.

“Daily tasks like feeding, egg collection and cleaning are now more streamlined, which helps us focus more on growth and quality,” she said.
Gumede, 38, added that they no longer raised laying hens free range, but now kept them caged because they had to find more efficient ways to manage a larger number of birds.
She said that the government support would not only create employment for more people, especially youth and women, but it would also contribute to local food production.
“By producing fresh, high-quality eggs consistently, we’re reducing dependence on large commercial suppliers and keeping food local. We also plan to supply early childhood development centres and local stores, making sure our community has access to affordable, nutritious protein,” the farmer said.
North West agriculture and rural development spokesperson Emelda Setlhako said funded projects were regularly monitored and evaluated to track progress and provide support where needed.
“Additionally, the department deploys extension officers who provide regular advisory and technical services to all farmers, regardless of whether they have received funding.
“These services are intended to enhance productivity, build resilience and ensure the long-term sustainability of agricultural enterprises across the province,” said Setlhako.
Gumede said the help from government meant that the farm was able to meet demand consistently and attract a larger number of clients.
“We currently employ five people full time. With the new structure, we anticipate increasing our team by at least two more and two youth trainees focusing on operations, packaging and distribution,” she said.
“As production grows, so will our need for skilled hands,” she concluded.
