Tsakani Eseyoma’s restaurant, Bite of Africa, has taken the township to the northern suburbs.
By opening a restaurant that provides magwinya (fat cakes) in Sandton, she struck gold in Johannesburg’s economic hub.
Hailing from Ekurhuleni, Eseyoma is an ICT and business graduate.
She told Vutivi News she chose Sandton because it was close to where she lived, and it was a dish that not many people in the area had been exposed to.
“During the lockdown period, I was struck by a lot of ideas for opening a business, since I was also stuck at home. I decided to follow something that I regarded as a passion because I have a great love for cooking and baking for people,” she said.
“I chose to specialise in magwinya because it’s an African delicacy that is very authentic. At the time that I opened the restaurant, people were at home and the demand was very high. Over the months it has gotten much better because there has been more awareness of the business.”
She also provides cinnamon buns.
Eseyoma said she three things separated her magwinya from the rest: quality, packaging and delivery.
“We do not only sell common magwinya. We also sell chocolate, caramel and white-chocolate magwinya,” she said.
“We use quality ingredients to ensure that our product retains its freshness,” she said.
The food comes in decorated boxes.
Bite of Africa also offers a delivery service.
“We cover many areas in Gauteng including Johannesburg, Centurion, Soweto and Ekurhuleni…”
Her vision is to turn her company into a franchising operation across the world.
“My dream is to see myself opening branches in the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries where I can introduce them to the cuisine of amagwinya,” she said.
