Chilate Pfunzo Monica is building more than just bricks, she is building a growing small enterprise in Limpopo’s construction supply sector.
What makes her business stand out is that, at just 25, she is a woman working in a field that is largely dominated by men, while also creating jobs in her community.
The Thohoyandou-based entrepreneur starts her day at 2am, running a brick manufacturing business that has steadily expanded since its launch in 2018. Her business, Chilate Enterprises, now produces over 1,000 bricks a day and employs 16 people.
According to the Clay Brick Association of South Africa, the industry produces more than 3.5 billion bricks annually and supports around 20,000 direct jobs.
Clay bricks are made from carefully selected clay and natural materials, and then fired at high temperatures to ensure strength and durability for construction use.
What began as a household activity has since evolved into a structured business supporting multiple households. Her father remains actively involved, providing ongoing support and technical guidance.
Monica said the idea was rooted in family experience.
“My father used to make bricks for our home, and that’s where I learned the skill,” she said.
Building a scalable production model
The brick manufacturing sector forms part of a wider construction industry that plays a key role in South Africa’s economy.
Monica’s business requires hard work and daily effort. She starts working at 2am so that she has enough time to produce bricks throughout the day and keep a steady supply for her customers.
This helps her meet demand and keep the business running smoothly.
In manufacturing, consistent daily output is critical, as it allows for better planning, order fulfilment, and customer reliability.
The business began gaining traction in 2020 after increased visibility on social media attracted new clients. This marked a turning point, highlighting the role of digital exposure in supporting small business growth.
Monica’s approach shows how operational discipline and consistent production can serve as a competitive advantage in small-scale manufacturing.
Clay bricks remain a widely used building material due to their durability, thermal efficiency, and long lifespan, making them a preferred choice in construction.
Operational challenges and growth constraints
Despite its progress, the business faces several operational challenges that limit its growth potential.
Weather conditions remain a significant risk. Heavy rains and flooding in Limpopo recently disrupted production, forcing a temporary shutdown and damaging stock that was not yet ready for sale.
“When it rains heavily, we sometimes have to stop production completely, and that affects our income,” Monica said.
This highlights the vulnerability of small manufacturers to external environmental factors.
Logistics is another major constraint. Without access to a dedicated delivery truck, the business relies on outsourced transport, increasing costs and affecting its ability to secure and retain clients.
Access to funding also remains a challenge. Limited financial support has slowed expansion, restricting the business’s ability to invest in equipment, infrastructure, and transport solutions.
Monica, however, continues to focus on long-term growth. With strong demand for building materials, she is positioning the business to expand beyond brick manufacturing.
Her long-term vision is to develop a one-stop shop for construction supplies, offering a range of products including bricks and other essential materials.
Her journey reflects key SME fundamentals, consistent production, disciplined operations, and gradual scaling. It also highlights the structural challenges small businesses face, including funding gaps, logistics constraints, and environmental risks.
As South Africa continues to prioritise small business development, enterprises like Chilate Enterprises illustrate both the potential and the barriers within the SME sector, showing that growth is often built through sustained effort and practical execution over time.
