When Baanetse Mokhotla faced academic exclusion while pursuing her BCom General Management degree, she turned a crisis into an opportunity. To keep busy during a tough job search, she turned to baking—a skill she first picked up at home and honed through online YouTube tutorials.
That determination birthed Afrikan Glow Fantasies, a specialised baking business based in QwaQwa, Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State.
Remarkably, the revenue generated from her fledgling enterprise allowed her to successfully appeal her university deregistration, return to her studies, and complete her business degree.

Afrikan Glow Fantasies started small, catering primarily to early-morning commuters and drivers on the streets of Phuthaditjhaba. Five years later, the brand has expanded significantly into custom event catering for birthday parties, local weddings, and community celebrations.
Mokhotla views her business not just as a standard bakery, but as an Afrikan Brand dedicated to bringing baked dreams to life through custom, personalised orders. While modern machinery helps streamline operations, most of the intricate design work is still crafted carefully by hand. The business currently employs three staff members—one full-time and two part-time.
Navigating economic challenges
Operating in a former homeland region comes with unique economic realities. Mokhotla strives to keep her prices accessible to the broader local community rather than catering only to an elite clientele.
However, macroeconomic pressures pose ongoing challenges. Rising fuel costs and broader economic inflation have driven up the prices of key ingredients and supplier deliveries, forcing occasional price adjustments.
Rather than taking short-term profits, Mokhotla sustains and scales her enterprise by consistently reinvesting earnings back into the business.
Beyond custom cakes, she actively shares her passion by holding “sip and cake” events, where she teaches aspiring bakers how to decorate various cake styles. For her, creating memorable moments for customers and tackling daily business problems head-on are what keep the brand growing.
