South Africa’s SMEs in the mining supply chain are caught in a high-stakes labour squeeze.
While soaring demand for critical minerals lets specialised micro-consultancies charge premium rates, small engineering workshops are steadily losing top artisans and technicians to deep-pocketed global mining houses.
Industry leaders warn that without unified, industry-led apprenticeship pipelines and structured technology transfer, domestic manufacturers and service providers risk being sidelined during the global energy transition.
The global transition toward electrification and clean energy has ignited a structural surge in demand for critical minerals like copper, platinum group metals, and battery inputs.
Yet, despite holding some of the world’s richest mineral reserves, South Africa’s industrial sectors face severe operational constraints.
This widening capability gap took centre stage as industrial stakeholders gathered for Future Skills and Careers Day at Electra Mining Africa.
Industry leaders warned that while the tertiary sector continues to churn out entry-level graduates, the primary operational threat stems from an acute shortage of experienced, mid-career professionals who can execute complex engineering projects and run modern mines.
Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) President Gary Lane said this talent constraint actively restricts local sector expansion.
“In South Africa, we’ve got to respond to that increase in demand, and we have a major constraint currently, which is actually a global constraint. We have a skills and capability shortage developing in this country. Not graduates coming out of university, but skilled, capable professionals that are able to deliver on our mining ambitions in the country,” Lane said.
He further cautioned that simply producing more degrees will not solve the structural deficit.
“What matters is turning talented people into capable practitioners who can make ethical and sound decisions, carry responsibility and apply their knowledge in demanding operating environments. Right now, our biggest challenge is conversion,” he said.
To address the gap between university curricula and operational tools, bodies such as the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering launched a dedicated Skills and Career Hub to foster direct collaboration between academia and equipment manufacturers.
Concurrently, the Engineering Council of South Africa and the Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Mechatronics and Computer Engineering (SAIMC) conducted specialised training streams focused on accelerating candidacy pathways to help young technical teams achieve professional registration status faster.
During these technical briefings, SAIMC User Advisory Council Chief Executive Officer Johan Maartens highlighted that streamlining professional registration for engineering and implementation teams is essential for keeping domestic operations competitive.
Addressing the broader statutory certification pipeline, SAIMM leadership stressed that creating an industry-approved capability-development programme is crucial, noting that “the objective is straightforward: create a structured pathway that helps graduates develop workplace competence, achieve professional registration and, where relevant, obtain statutory certification, while continuing to grow throughout their careers.”
