Esethu Mashobane, 22, is carving out a space for herself in the carpentry industry, proving that skilled trades are not limited by gender.
Originally from eMlazi, Durban, the University of Mpumalanga Bachelor of Development Studies final-year student is turning raw materials into stylish, practical furniture through her business, Esethu Woodworks.
Her journey began in January 2026 when she enrolled in a short carpentry course at the Umalume Wamakhabethe training academy.
Developing a strong passion for hands-on creation, she launched Esethu Woodworks the following month with just R4,000, purchasing additional tools as client orders grew. Using her skills as a content creator, Mashobane leveraged social media to master marketing, brand building, and client communication.
Beyond crafting custom pieces like TV stands, Mashobane is actively empowering others. She has employed young women and expanded her business to offer five-day carpentry training courses.
“This has led me to start offering carpentry training, which has become one of the most fulfilling parts of my journey because I get to share a skill that can help people create opportunities for themselves,” Mashobane explains.
Navigating the dual demands of full-time studies and business ownership without traditional funding, Mashobane views operating in a male-dominated field as a powerful motivator. Her efforts align with broader industry movements, such as the South African Women in Plumbing and Trades initiative, which promotes training, mentorship, and business support to encourage more women to enter skilled trades.
For Mashobane, building furniture is just the foundation for something much larger. “Entrepreneurship is about more than making money,” she says. “It is about independence, creativity, growth, and creating opportunities for myself and others.”
Through Esethu Woodworks, she continues to demonstrate that determination, craftsmanship, and practical skills can break down barriers and build a sustainable future.
