Limpopo entrepreneur Lerato Nkgapele, 24, has turned her passion for sneakers and technology into a business that provides customers with access to authentic products at competitive prices.
Nkgapele, from Tzaneen, founded ELCEE Trading Enterprise in 2021 after identifying a gap among young consumers who wanted the latest sneakers and iPhones but often struggled with high retail prices, limited access and counterfeit products.
The business has now grown from being run out of Nkgapele’s bedroom to serving customers nationwide through courier deliveries.
She said social media, referrals and good customer service have driven much of its growth.
The business specialises in authentic sneakers, including limited editions, as well as new and pre-owned iPhones. It also offers deliveries, trade-ins and warranties on devices.
Operating mainly through WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok, ELCEE Trading Enterprise sources products from legitimate retailers, trusted suppliers and verified distributors.
Nkgapele said quality checks were essential to maintaining customer trust.
“Building trust was a challenge. We had to prove authenticity through reviews, unboxing videos and guarantees,” she said.
Nkgapele’s main customers are students and young professionals who follow trends.
Despite challenges such as competition, fluctuating exchange rates and limited stock, Nkgapele remains focused on expansion.
Her plans include opening a physical store, expanding into laptops and accessories, launching an e-commerce website and securing official reseller partnerships.
Nkgapele said her ultimate goal is to establish ELCEE Trading Enterprise as one of South Africa’s most trusted sneaker and technology resellers.
“My business matters because we make premium products accessible. Not everyone can afford retail, but we offer good deals and payment options,” she said.
Nkgapele’s business also creates employment opportunities.
“I work with delivery guys, content creators, and sometimes hire help for packaging and marketing. It’s about building a brand that gives back skills and income,” she added.
