The food delivery industry is a fast-growing sector, and businesses in townships are jumping on the bandwagon.
One of them is White Fox, which believes that delivering food is not just a service, but also about improving the quality of life for those who live in townships.
White Fox co-founder Lerato Monguni, who is from Chiawelo in Soweto, told Vutivi News that the business was launched in 2018.
“I started the business with two other people… we started in Protea Glen, but things did not go well so we decided to relocate,” she said.
“We relocated to another part of Soweto and came back to Protea Glen to resume our business.”
White Fox delivers food and groceries from local businesses. It also delivers cosmetics and clothes, which are all sourced from SMMEs in Soweto.
Monguni said White Fox had since opened operations in the Vaal area.
“Our client base in Vaal mostly consists of students, but the vision remains the same,” she said.
“The market in the Vaal has grown compared to Soweto, and what stands out about this market is that there are a lot of family businesses in the area.”
Monguni said her business ensured ease of access.
“The idea is to bring convenience to township residents. If you want to eat your favourite dish, you should not have to struggle for it,” she said.
“Normally when you imagine the best place where they sell local food it’s either too far or it’s too packed. We make sure that customers get their food in half the time it would normally take them if they went to the shop physically, and it saves them the time to do what they like doing.”
Food delivery services, and delivery services in general, have increased over the years, even during the Covid-19 pandemic, which has seen a great demand as people do not want to go to the shops.
Monguni said to keep up with similar services, White Fox has an app to order items.
“If you order any groceries, you send us your grocery list. We will pack the groceries and deliver to your doorstep. In the case where someone wants to buy fast food, they would either order on the app or via WhatsApp,” she said.
“We collect the food and deliver it to the customer’s doorstep. We also work with the Instagram market, which are the people that sell clothes on Instagram.”
For these purchases, it took a day to receive an order, Monguni said.
For Monguni, strengthening the local economy is critical.
“Our biggest aim is to grow the township economy more than anything else and that is why we work with small businesses,” she said.
